Lock Down a Tutor BEFORE Trouble Strikes

Foresight is a wonderful thing. The ability to plan ahead is one of those tricks of adulthood that gets easier with practice and makes more sense with age. At a some point we realize that a little diligence now can save a whole lot of hassle down the road. It’s why we bring our cars in for regular oil changes, turn down a loan to search for a better interest rate, or carry a coat to the park, even when our kids insist they won’t need one. In all these cases, some early action makes dealing with life’s troubles all the more manageable.

So why, when it comes to the classroom, do we wait for chaos to strike before we take action? Think about the last time you considered a tutor for your student. Was it because you wanted to keep them on the right track, continuing to get the grades that put them at the top of the class? Most likely, it wasn’t.

Build a Rapport Before Stress Strikes

Students who have good rapport with their teachers tend to be more open in expressing doubts about their grasp of the material, more engaged while receiving instruction, and more motivated to impress their instructor with what they’ve learned.

While good tutors will look for ways to connect with a student under any circumstance, the task of building a relationship becomes more difficult when a student is under the stress of trying to recover from bad grades. Struggles in the classroom can make a student feel unconfident or overwhelmed. They may feel embarrassed by their performance or even annoyed that they’re forced to do well in a subject that they find boring.

When you combine all these stressful feelings with the added task of learning to trust a new adult, the task of staying focused becomes all the more difficult. By introducing your student to a tutor when things are going well, they can focus on growing comfortable with their tutor before they ever have to worry about the pressure to perform. And that’s a good thing!
